LANDSCAPE ADVISORY GROUP
Each month in this newsletter the Landscape
Advisory Group attempts to offer Coronado Shores residents and readers of
this community publication a bit of insight into what is involved in formulating
and executing landscaping policy in our community. Every community organization is
constrained by cost considerations as it attempts to provide the best possible
service that it can. Our's is no different.
So, this month's article could very well
be entitled "The Cost of Color". What
do we mean by the "the cost of color"? Perhaps this should be phrased
somewhat differently, that is, as "color costs". We know that everyone
admires the colorful plantings that appear in the Village at the corner of R.H. Dana
Place and Orange Avenue on the N.E. corner of the Hotel Del Coronado property. Masses of
seasonal flowers are planted there to invite passersby to spend a few
moments admiring them and enjoying the soothing babbling of the water fountain. It
would be nice to replicate this at Coronado Shores, but we simply cannot afford it.
Colorful seasonal and annual flowers that have to be replaced frequently are quite
expensive, both the plant materials and the labor of planting them, and then removing
them. Yes, color costs!
Our solution at Coronado Shores has been
to pursue the approach of providing pleasing color through the use of perennial flowers
and shrubs that can last several years. Among the more successful of these plants in the
Shores environment are Geraniums, Star Jasmine, Agapanthas, Gazanias, Gaillardia,
Roses, Indian Hawthorn, Hibiscus, and that southern California stalwart, the
Bird of Paradise. Even these "star" performers have their vulnerabilities as was
demonstrated during the severe winter storms earlier this year. It has been necessary
during the past few months to replant several of the perennial beds that were ravaged by
the salt and wind (more than by cold weather). Once established, Bougainvillea does quite
well. However, we have found it to be a difficult plant to get started in our environment.
Nevertheless, we continue to try and get some of these showy plants to succeed here,
especially along the perimeter of the complex.
So, the battle to achieve color in our
landscaping while reigning in costs is an ongoing issue that challenges those
responsible for providing stewardship of our landscap-ing at Coronado Shores.
